Look around then.

Five years on, isn’t it about time we had something to show for Brexit?

That depends on what measure you use.

As our trade agreements with Australia and Japan both stipulate that products manufactured in the UK will comply with European standards - and will do so in perpetuity - one answer is we haven't left yet.

Another answer is we started to leave in March 2017 when the UK formally submitted notice under Article 50

Yet another answer is possibly in July when the UK has promised to bring in border checks on produce coming from the EU to match the checks made on the same produce coming in from other markets like Russia but as we're not going to have the capacity to introduce those checks we'll either all have to go vegan next week, sort out yet another delay or scrap checks on produce from other countries. The last is not the best plan in that the produce we let in unchecked could come from Chernobyl and be highly radioactive but having our kids glowing in dark could be just another #brexitbenefit.

So anywhere from 2017 to Never going to happen.

The Northern Irish First Minister has just taken an action that will create a constitutional crisis and may well end the union once and for all.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-60236169

His problem, and another to add to the growing list for Boris Johnson, is the border checks between the UK and Ireland are there to ensure compliance with the Good Friday Agreement. The GFA is an international treaty and all actions relating to it sit in the Westminister Parliament, and the Act of Union says that all matters relating to international relations also sits in the Westminister Parliament. So although he claims to be acting in defence of the Union Poots is actually repudiating the Act of Union by his actions.

His actions leave Boris Johnson no choice but to dissolve the Northern Ireland executive, even if he 100% agrees with the actions he cannot set the precedent of allowing the Northern Irish Assembly to manage it's own foreign relations, especially not with the EU for reasons that become obvious later. In reality that's not much of a problem because new elections are due in May anyway and it's almost a given now those elections will be won by Sinn Fein and Michelle O'Neill will become the first Catholic First Minister, and she will implement the Northern Ireland Protocol to the letter. However what that will do politically is turn a lot of de Pfeffel's staunchest allies in the Conservative party against him.

What's worse for de Pfeffel is this is lose-lose. If he allows Poots to stamp his little feet and pull this electioneering stunt for the May elections he sets a precedent that will allow Michelle O'Neill to manage relations with the EU in a way that formalises a direct relationship between Northern Ireland and the EU, perhaps joining the EEA. There is no way he can afford to set that precedent.

If, on the other hand, he acts decisively and dissolves the NI Assembly there will undoubtedly be more letters from the Brexit wing of the party who simply haven't thought through the implications.

Sucks to be him.

That didn't take long.

de Pfeffel wants to hide and pretend this direct challenge to the powers of the Westminister parliament isn't happening but if he does that things will quickly escalate.

If I were the First Minister of Scotland right now I would be using this episode to promise to conclude an agreement with the EU without the consent of Westminster. That will further drive home the effect of this stunt on the integrity of the Union to the Tories, I would then use the pushback given to Scotland, but not to Northern Ireland, to show the Union is places Scotland's right to represent itself on the world stage not under equitable limits of law but at the caprice of an Imperial power.

The border checks carried on and the first minister is gone.

Michelle O'Neill has acted with great dignity and statesmanship in contrast to the now former First Minister

The future of the former Rowntree plant had been in doubt since Nestle announced in April that it wanted to end production at the site.

Fawdon has been producing confectionery since 1958 but, according to unions, the manufacture of Fruit Pastilles will switch to the Czech Republic and Toffee Crisps will be made in Poland.

It's all working out just like remainers said it would.

Didn't Cadbury's take all production to Poland while we were in the EU?

Surely that should have been enough of a warning.

Why do we need a Minister for Brexit Opportunity . ???

We were told the advantages of Brexit were going to be self evident . ( or am I missing something ??) :kinell:

So Brexiters can claim success in creating a job! Smugg will have an easy ride though as "Brexit opportunities" are non-existent.

Fucking hell, you're a wet fanny aren't you.
What the fuck is going through your head where you start thinking you're going to start eating vegetables from Chernobyl?
What makes you think you're aren't already?
Or do you really think that no EU laws are ever broken?
If brexit is so bad, why can't you keep to the real facts of brexit than having to make dumb shit up.
