It's really a yes or no answer followed by some clarification possibly.

By the letter of the law, no.

Apparently, yes.

Not only not independent but has previous form for government cover ups.

Partygate investigator helped shield No.10 from scrutiny over Grenfell

The top civil servant investigating parties at Downing Street has again been implicated in withholding information from public scrutiny – this time relating to the Grenfell Tower fire.

Documents uncovered today show Sue Gray was consulted over blocking a journalist's request for emails to and from Number 10 adviser Elizabeth Sanderson.

t comes after a campaigner warned that Gray, who has been appointed to oversee the party probe, is “not a person that believes in open and full disclosure”. In documents obtained by openDemocracy, Gray was seen urging officers not to respond to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request about the infected blood scandal, instead citing the Chilcot Inquiry into the Iraq war as an example of how to “releas[e] the information in a managed way”.

Word is that he's about to be elevated to the Lords despite his total incompetence in public office and probably down to the book, personally I'd be more worried about getting Epstiened in this political atmosphere :ooer:

Threatening to dish the dirt on your perversions is on a whole different level to withholding funding from vital projects such as new schools in your constituency and that is blackmail against the people rather than the subject.

In my view.

Worse still, he might receive a knighthood. WTF for i've no idea. :dunno:

Yeah that fits. The same idiot who as defence secretary publicly said, "Russia should go away and shut up".

Maybe he thinks it makes him sound tough and macho but it just shows everyone he's a total prat.

Surely the full and frank enquiry into Islamophobia in the Tory party de Pfeffel promised when he became the leader of the conservative party would have put paid to such .....

Oh yes, like every other promise made by de Pfeffel that never happened.

Number 10 police questioned by Sue Gray over Downing Street parties

Officers’ ‘extremely damning’ accounts of comings-and-goings in Westminster to form key part of civil servant’s report

Police officers who guard Downing Street have been interviewed by Sue Gray for the “partygate” investigation, The Telegraph can disclose.

Members of the Metropolitan Police’s Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command who were on duty when a string of lockdown-breaking gatherings are alleged to have taken place have provided detailed testimonies about what they witnessed.

The statements, described by one source as “extremely damning”, are expected to form a key part of Ms Gray’s report, which is due to be published within days.

The senior civil servant has also spoken to the Prime Minister, civil servants and political advisers, and accessed security pass logs and even Boris Johnson’s official diary.

Dominic Cummings, Mr Johnson’s former chief aide turned hostile adversary, will be interviewed by Ms Gray on Monday, according to reports.

Testing time for Tories ahead of report

Downing Street is bracing for the reaction from Tory MPs to the report, amid fears that a torrent of no confidence letters could be submitted if it lays blame at the feet of Mr Johnson.

Over the weekend, “Red Wall” Tory Aaron Bell, who was first elected MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme in 2019, became the latest rebel to hand in a letter to the 1922 committee chairman, according to reports.

On Monday, William Wragg, another staunch Conservative critic of the Prime Minister, will meet with the Met Police over allegations that Government whips have blackmailed and threatened backbenchers.

The Prime Minister is facing one of the most pivotal weeks of his premiership as he awaits Ms Gray’s report, which could prompt his own MPs to move against him.

He is expected to launch a clear-out of key Number 10 figures ensnared by the row, overhauling his top team of advisers and officials, in response to the probe.

Officers ‘only too willing’ to co-operate

Officers deployed to guard Downing Street would have a detailed knowledge of the comings and goings at Number 10 and would therefore be in a position to corroborate some of the most damning allegations that have emerged in recent weeks, such as whether a suitcase of alcohol was brought in to one event on the eve of the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.

They may also have been in a position to comment on the wider drinking culture in Downing Street during lockdown, and whether they issued any warnings to party attendees or officials.

Amid reports that some Number 10 staffers have been “circling the wagons” by holding back information from the Gray inquiry, and even deleting incriminating photographs and WhatsApp messages, the police officers are likely to be seen as impartial observers.

While police officers cannot be compelled to speak to Ms Gray – unlike Downing St staff – it is understood they were “only too willing” to co-operate.

One source said on Sunday night: “Met officers have spoken to Sue Gray now, as you would expect, and have been able to provide a lot of information.”

Asked how significant the material they had disclosed was, the source added: “Put it this way, if Boris Johnson is still Prime Minister by the end of the week, I’d be very surprised.”

Scotland Yard under the spotlight

Scotland Yard has come under fire for refusing to launch a criminal investigation into allegations of parties during lockdown.

However, sources have said that the officers on duty in Downing Street have “nothing to hide” and their testimony is beyond reproach.

A Scotland Yard spokesman would not be drawn on whether officers had been interviewed by Ms Gray, but added: “The Met has ongoing contact with the Cabinet Office in relation to this inquiry.”

On Tuesday, Dame Cressida Dick, the Met Police commissioner, is expected to be questioned about “partygate” when she makes her regular appearance at the London Assembly police and crime committee.

Once the report is published, there are likely to be fresh calls for the police to investigate any breaches of lockdown rules.

It was also confirmed on Sunday night that Ms Gray has had access to the system that records when staff use their swipe cards to enter and exit Downing Street.

A log of all visitors, and the names of those who sponsor their visit, are also retained on the same system.

Alleged parties in the flat that Mr Johnson shares above No 11 Downing Street with his wife, Carrie, and their family are also covered by Ms Gray’s probe, it has emerged.

As well as being able to describe the movements of people in and out of Number 10 on the dates in question, Scotland Yard officers might also be able to lift the lid on some of the goings-on inside the building.

It is believed that officers were called to investigate an incident at a Christmas party in Downing Street on Dec 18 2020, when a security alarm was accidentally triggered.

It is also thought they might be in a position to confirm crucial details about the event in the Downing Street garden on May 15 2021, such as what time it concluded and whether there was music and dancing.

Many Tory MPs have kept their silence over “partygate”, insisting they wanted to see Ms Gray’s findings before speaking out.

If Mr Johnson is found to have misled MPs with his remarks about drinks parties, questions will grow about his future in office.

The Ministerial Code states that a frontbencher should offer their resignation if they are found to have misled Parliament.

Dominic Raab last week conceded that deliberately lying to Parliament was “normally” a resigning matter, while Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor, stressed that the Ministerial Code was “clear on these matters”.

The Deputy Prime Minister on Sunday signalled that No 10 may not publish all elements of the probe, although insisted all the “findings” will be made public.

Mr Raab told the BBC that he was “not quite sure the shape and form it will come”, but said there would be “full transparency”.

Senior Conservatives have raised concerns that Downing Street could attempt to redact significant portions of the inquiry.

A Government source told The Telegraph that while the format of the final report remains unclear, it is not expected to put into the public domain all witness statements, WhatsApp messages, and granular details about the actions of individuals.

So Met officers are more than willing to assist Sue Gray with her investigation but the Met itself won't investigate despite potential illegal activity?

Seems as if Bodger goes down he will take trust and confidence in the Conservative party, the civil service and the police along with him.

Totally normal country.
