Argentina presidential election: far-right libertarian wins

Javier Milei, a volatile far-right libertarian who has vowed to “exterminate” inflation and take a chainsaw to the state, has been elected president of Argentina, catapulting South America’s second largest economy into an unpredictable and potentially turbulent future.

With more than 99% of votes counted, the Mick Jagger impersonating TV celebrity-turned politician, who is often compared to Donald Trump, had secured 55.69% of the vote compared with 44.3% for his rival, the centre-left finance minister Sergio Massa.

From what I've read Milei is more Tucker Carlson/Sean Hannity than Donald Trump and unbelievably that's a good thing.

So like Brazil and the USA Argentina has taken the step of electing an authoritarian populists who has made promises that will be difficult if not impossible to keep.

In fairness to the people of Argentina they're in a pretty dire situation and have been since 2002 when they defaulted on around $90 billion of external debt, most of it owed to US banks. Melei has vowed to eliminate whole government departments, to cut ties with Argentina's biggest trading partners and replace its currency with the US dollar.

Neither of the options presented to Argentina's voters in this run off election was a good one, let us hope that behind the wild rhetoric the celebrity economist at least holds off on his promise to get The Malvinas, the name the Argentinians give to the Falkland Islands, back

You can't get something back that you never had.

Argentina's claim to the Falklands/Malvinas dates to 1816 when it is argued that sovereignty of the islands was transferred to Argentina from Spain upon independence, a principle known as uti possidetis juris.

This is a principle of customary international law preserves the boundaries of colonies emerging as States. It was actually originally applied to establish the boundaries of decolonized territories in Latin America. The British did not dispute the principle at the time as they gave up a settlement, Port Egmont, on the Island in 1770 so it could be argued the British have no legal claim to the Falklands.

I think we'll struggle. Haven't we given all our bullets to Zelensky?

At the very least it's going to cause some issues in the financial markets.

If the central bank and the local currency are going to be abolished that will mean all of the internal debt, that is money borrowed in pesos by individuals and companies from Argentine citizens and supporting Argentine pensions and investments will be, in effect, written off to pay Argentina's $300 billion external debt.

That will mean that many of the bonds capitalising Argentina's banks become worthless overnight, a string of foreclosures and pulling in of credit lines etc.

It will get messy both in Argentina and elsewhere

Javier Milei, the new president of Argentina, has about-turned on his commitment to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement.

Mr Milei, who was sworn into office on Sunday, had previously said he intended to rescind Argentina’s participation in the agreement after calling climate change a hoax.

But the country’s new top climate diplomat, Marcia Levaggi, told Reuters on Sunday that Mr Milei’s government had sent her to head the Argentine delegation at the United Nations Cop28 climate talks underway in Dubai.

Welcome news, although no-one is sure why.

As an economist perhaps he's a good enough mathematician to have worked out it isn't a hoax after all when presented with the evidence.
