Shane MacGowan dead.

A right load of bollocks...

Fairytale of New York songwriter dies

Postby Cactus Jack » Thu Nov 30, 2023 5:26 pm

The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan has died at the age of 65, just a week after he was discharged from hospital.

The news of his death was confirmed by his wife, Irish journalist and author Victoria Mary Clarke, who said in a statement: “Shane will always be the light that I hold before me and the measure of my dreams and the love of my life”.

Never far from controversy and noted for his heavy use of alcohol, cigarettes and drugs - not to mention poor dental health - in many ways it's a surprise he survived this long.

Fairy Tale of New York is the one Christmas song that I've not heard on the radio this year. I know they played with offending lyrics in the last few years but they seem to have cancelled it all together!

Me neither!
I thought he was a 100% Irish.

I thought he was a 100% Irish.

He was - he was just born in England.

As both his parents were Irish the of whether to be British or Irish was his and he chose Irish.

Had be chosen British he would have been 100% British.

The weird and wonderful worlds of nationality, identity and self eh?

They played it on Heart just after I posted

I'd not heard it prior to his death though, such a shame as so many polls have it as the best Christmas song ever!

The Pogues and Shane had a legacy...

He went to Westminster school, mate. I also watched tributes on the telly featuring him covering traditional English and Scottish folk tunes and calling them Irish songs.

There's not a lot of difference between us you hairy bastard, two of by kids are Anglo/Irish :gigglesnshit:
