POLICE have launched an appeal for information following the severe fire at the Crooked House.

Officers confirmed that no one was believed to be inside the building at the time and no one has been reported injured.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "We are now working with fire investigators to establish the cause of the fire.

"Fire investigators are inspecting the scene this morning and officers are making local enquiries to secure any information that might help the investigation.

I went there once when I was doing some subbing in the Black Country and it was like a bad David Lynch theme park. The only thing that was plumb was the grandfather clock in the lobby and every other surface including picture rails, skirting boards and normal stuff like tables and the actual bar were all on the piss, the barman rolled a marble uphill on one of the dado rails and I felt physically sick

Odd that it burned down just after it was sold though...

Not sure if there’s anything in it, but a thread on Twitter about lots of similar old pubs bought up by developers in the area, mysteriously burn down, then get built on. Can’t list pile of ash and rubble.

council reference The Crooked House demolition.

“Our officers carried out a site visit to the site yesterday (August 7th), prior to the demolition of the building.

“Officers agreed a programme of works with the landowner’s representative to ensure the safety of the building and the wider site.

“The agreed course of action included the removal of three elements of the first-floor front elevation only. This was only to avoid the weak parts of the structure from falling.

“At no point did the council agree the demolition of the whole structure nor was this deemed necessary.

“This council finds the manner in which the situation was managed following the fire completely unacceptable and contrary to instructions provided by our officers.

“As such, we are currently investigating potential breaches of both the Town and Country Planning Act and the Buildings Act.

“Demolition of a building should be carried out in accordance with Schedule 2 Part 11 Class B of The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015. The steps required by the legislation were not carried out in this case.

“We have referred these matters to our legal team with a view to taking enforcement action.

Following your posts, it was clear that initially you hadn’t a clue what it meant!
It’s clear you now have, after googling, and seem to be making a new attempt at racist slurs from me.
Whereas in reality that term had always been used as a joke about any dodgy fires burning down buildings for insurance purposes.
