Seeing as Europe is suffering too they should be encouraged to cancel as well.
Boris should give the go ahead for that mine in Cumbria to open up and exploration in the North Sea oil and gas fields should resume.
It should be clear by now we can't run the modern world on sunshine and windmills.
They have their place but they can never be the backbone of a 21st century industrial world.
If this was announced this week investment would flow into the UK instead of being on the verge of drying up.
When major industries are saying they might not make it through the winter that hasn't even started yet then investors pull out making it impossible to salvage these industries.
The steel industry could really take off with that coking coal under Cumbria.

If Boris announced this now as opposed to waiting till it's to late he'd get a lot of flak for sure but if Europe were seen to carry on walking into darkness and chaos he'd be seen to have courage and leadership skills he'd be the hero we needed but I doubt he's got the bottle.

Dear guest, I disapproved a post that should have been approved, only noticed when I didn't see it in the thread.

Very sorry.

And right on cue...

Suspend climate policies and cancel COP26 to save Britain from looming energy disaster
Date: 20/09/21

The Global Warning Policy Forum (GWPF) is calling on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to take swift and radical action to suspend damaging climate policies and prevent the looming energy crisis from turning into an economic and social disaster.

The GWPF has consistently warned that Britain’s unilateral climate policies under both Labour and Conservative administrations were creating an insecure and expensive energy sector that would ultimately fail due to consumer costs and collapsing security of supply.

These warnings are now fully vindicated. Over-reliance on renewables and interconnectors and a failure to maintain a diverse portfolio of energy supply and electricity generation has resulted in a fragile, weather-dependent British system that is critically vulnerable to pan-European low wind conditions, interconnector failure, and high regional gas prices.

Income support subsidies to renewable energy investors currently total about £10 billion a year, and are still rising, while grid management costs have increased six-fold (to just under £2 billion a year) since the early 2000s when renewables were first introduced in significant quantities.

The severity of the current crisis merits emergency measures, not only to protect consumers and the economy, but also to avoid the crisis from turning into social disaster as winter approaches.

The GWPF is calling on the Government to:

1. Suspend all green levies on energy bills, funding subsidies temporarily out of taxation, but acting firmly to cancel these subsidies in the near term.

2. Cancel constraint payments, and compel wind and solar generators to pay for their own balancing costs, thus incentivising them to self-dispatch only when economic.

3. Remove all fiscal and other disincentives to oil and gas exploration, including shale gas, to increase domestic production levels.

4. Suspend carbon taxation on coal and gas generation in order to provide consumer relief and ensure security of supply.

5. Re-open recently closed gas storage facilities and support new storage projects.

6. Suspend all further policy initiatives directed towards the Net Zero target, including the Carbon Budgets, the heat pump targets, and the overly ambitious timetable for the ban on petrol and diesel engines, until the UK energy sector has been stabilised.

7. Facilitate the acceleration of building and deploying Small Modular Reactors for both electricity and heat.

Gas firms seek help amid higher energy bill fears
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-58620167

Because of price caps the energy companies cannot pass on the price rises to us at the daily rate they are rising for them so these rocketing prices are a serious problem for them.
The government is considering offering emergency state-backed loans amid fears for struggling energy companies and soaring bills for customers.

Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng held crisis talks with industry bosses including Centrica and E.On on Monday.

High demand for gas and reduced supply are behind a surge in wholesale prices.

Consumers are protected from sudden hikes through the government's energy price cap, which is the maximum price they can be charged.

But that also means energy firms are unable to pass on higher wholesale costs to their customers, which is forcing some companies to go out of business. The UK's sixth largest energy company, Bulb, is seeking a bailout, while four smaller firms are expected to go bust in the coming days as a result.

Only a couple of weeks ago someone was recommending BULB to me on here I think it was.
The speed this thing is changing at will leave many people unprepared.

I've got gas in for a year but my coal and logs are low I need to sort that out before they get way over the top expensive!

Just saw on BBC, business secretary says lights will not go out in UK this winter due to energy crisis.
We'll see.
As business secretary he can't really say anything else can he unless of course he wants investment to be withdrawn.

Snow in N America and India too.
That predicted hard long winter seems to be coming a little early maybe.

Morning Jack , it's been really nippy cold in the mornings lately, warms up to a pleasant autumn day then chills right down again around 6pm. I put the heating on at 3am.

Do you have a back boiler to heat water?

I recall living in a cottage in the sticks, nearest neighbours were half a mile away, with no central heating and just the fire to heat water.

An Immersion heater in summer took care of the hot water, it would have been daft to light a fire :smilin:

Looking out of the front windows, across snow covered landscapes, we had a great view of the Black Mountains covered in snow.

They were the first to get covered in snow, and the last to be rid of snow.

I understand why your younger relatives love the thought of snow.

So the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference is to be held in a flood devastated city!
Convenient.

Think they will discuss restoration of the water table? For those concerned about flooding, it is odd they redirect water courses with improperly managed infrastructure then have the cheek to blame nature. Floods in calafornia are an example where blaming (using it loosely in this instance) fire (where do people think clouds come from?) damage not recovering fast enough to stop land slides. A month later it wouldn't be an issue from reports I have heard by fire and rescue services.

We just had two maybe three days can't remember of daytime and through the nightime temperatures of 15/16 C with even a nurse friend remarking on it to my wife in the middle of Morrisons yesterday.
What on earth is going on she said as I have never seen that before!
That strange temperature change dragged very warm air up from the south and caused a lot of rain... just in time for cop summit in Glasgow.

An hour-and-a-half video is too much to sit through, how does it relate to the nurse in the supermarket?
