Army drivers on standby to relieve Britain’s food shortage

Army drivers on standby to relieve Britain’s food shortage

Postby Cactus Jack » Sun Aug 08, 2021 8:57 am

ARMY HGV drivers have been put on standby to relieve Britain’s chronic shortage of truckers and resulting food shortages.

A formal request from the Government for military help is expected imminently.

Around 2,000 HGV drivers from the Royal Logistics Corps and other regiments are being put on a five-day notice to assist with distribution of food and essential supplies.

The emergency measure is being taken as the shortage of qualified truckers in the UK reaches crisis point.

Sainsburys Kidderminster's freezers broke down a couple of weeks ago, that's probably when the top photo was taken.

If there's a food shortage, how come no one is losing weight? :gigglesnshit:

There's such a lot of garbage on Twitter. People shouldn't be fooled by one photograph.

Unfortunately the foods that are left are highly processed with lots of fat and sugar meaning many people who struggle with their weight will struggle more. And of course that has implications for diabetics and those with high blood pressure - all at a time when covid infections are starting to rise again.

We all know how much more dangerous covid is when other underlying conditions are active.

You mean that if there's no cabbage left, they're forced to buy chocolate brownies instead?

It means if there's no salad to have with a steak a consumer will have chips.

Or more generally if there's no fresh fruit and veg the consumer goes to starchy carbohydrates.

Seems like a great time to learn how to drive a truck..

Job opportunities have been created. Guess you can't make folks take them.

Sounds like an old saying about horses and water.

It takes time for people to learn to drive, and especially to drive HGVs safely.

Having an inexperienced driver on busy roads with a heavy load, a busy schedule and no clue is a recipe that will lead to more accidents which will just lead to even more logistical problems.

However much homespun snark you think you can throw at the problem the problem doesn't get solved by homespun snark - it required planning and preparation and it got neither.

You would complain if there weren't enough jobs for drivers too.

Having a high demand for workers is a good thing, even if it causes temporary problems.

It means more people can work.

This is a story of a Polish driver who wanted to work in the UK but was deported and even served a short time in custody.

Jakub has seen a lot of information about how much the British need truck drivers. He has previously lived and worked in the UK for 6 years but now got to the point where he was not satisfied with the return to the Polish labor market. So he decided to try his luck in the UK again boarding the plane in June.

Of course, one had to prepare properly for the trip. Jakub terminated the rental agreement, sold the car, interviewed three potential employers remotely, and began applying for Settled Status. Anybody could have applied for this status by the end of June this year, as long as you are a citizen of an EU country and have spent at least five years in a row in the UK. Thanks to this, you do not have to apply for a normal work visa and stay in the country on simplified terms.
