Because we have a million more jobs waiting to be filled than we have job seekers to fill them. :dunno:

That's great.

Your country will be at full employment with high wages soon.

Maybe you could learn how to drive..

And people are comfy in their current employment, what now?

We've technically been at full employment for several years, we are now at underemployment and there is no sign of either milk or honey due to no drivers. It's just the way it is here now.

Are there not 21 year olds with shitty jobs in the UK?

Stoo, this isn't rocket science. Driving a truck isn't a bad gig. People will do it when the other options suck.

Has to be a shit load of people working at McDonald's that would love to double their income.

But the ONS said the population estimates used to calculate the unemployment rate had changed and the figure for the three months to April would have been 4.8% under the new system.

Britain's labour market has been propped up by finance minister Rishi Sunak's job subsidies which paid the wages on 8.9 million jobs at its peak in May 2020, during the first COVID-19 lockdown, and supported 2.4 million jobs at the end of May 2021.

Found your problem..

2.4 million of them..

You have 2.4 million potential truck drivers as soon as the subsidies are cut off.

They can't be HGV drivers straight away and the problem is immediate.

What's you plan C.

This is a story of a Polish driver who wanted to work in the UK but was deported and even served a short time in custody.

Jakub has seen a lot of information about how much the British need truck drivers. He has previously lived and worked in the UK for 6 years but now got to the point where he was not satisfied with the return to the Polish labor market. So he decided to try his luck in the UK again boarding the plane in June.

Of course, one had to prepare properly for the trip. Jakub terminated the rental agreement, sold the car, interviewed three potential employers remotely, and began applying for Settled Status. Anybody could have applied for this status by the end of June this year, as long as you are a citizen of an EU country and have spent at least five years in a row in the UK. Thanks to this, you do not have to apply for a normal work visa and stay in the country on simplified terms.

Come over, get nicked and earn nothing.

The top comment to that article sums it up.

"I live in hope that eventually the U.K. will 'get a grip'. Make sure functionaries are properly trained, understand their job, and do it properly."

I would suggest to not hold your breath; things will get worse before (/ if) they start to get better.

Who from EU would WANT to come to UK (or should that be GB -exc NI) if they have viable options elsewhere?

Why don't people from the UK fill the positions?

Those qualified are already driving.

Any non-licensed that fancy learning can't get tests because there's a backlog of drivers waiting to complete their test.

Job opportunities have been created. Guess you can't make folks take them.

Sounds like an old saying about horses and water.

Shit money.

Now that's a regulatory problem. Fucking government workers.

Can't hardly mention government worker without mentioning backlog.

So it appears that we have folks that want to drive, but that entity the world over that makes transactions more difficult is causing problems per as usual.

No I don't think we can blame the GOP for this one.

You have a very simplistic view - folk can't just hop into these things and start delivering up and down the country!

It has been explained to him many times.

In the UK we can't afford to let untrained drivers take control, not always successfully, of HGVs and drive them through our town centres.

Whislt in charge of a HGV something as trivial as knowing how to adjust your mirrors can cause a tragedy
