I'm impressed with it to be honest. Folks operating a life saving service on a voluntary basis.

Seems like it works very well and could be a model for a lot of other services.

They get a lot of money and a lot of support from the government too but yes it works well.

As a child many of us gave to a variety of Blue Peter appeals - Blue Peter was a popular children's TV show at the time - and gave drinks cans, milk bottle tops and old paperbacks to give a number of lifeboats to coastal towns that have saved hundreds of lives over the years

If you want to see them in action, BBC made a series of excellent documentaries called "Saving Lives at Sea" following various lifeboats around the coast. Rescues can vary from the mundane to dramatic knife edge stuff, in other words, exactly what they experience as when a call goes out (known as a shout), they never know how the rescue is going to pan out.

And yes, they put to sea whatever the weather.

This says they don't.

Our lifeboat service receives no UK government funding and less than 2% of the RNLI’s total funding comes from government sources.

As a charity, 92% of our total income comes from donations and so our lifesaving service relies on the generosity of our supporters. Read more about how your support helps.

I specifically used the word support not funding for that very reason.

Support includes a range of non-financial measures including close co-operation with the coast guard, sometimes additional employment protection for volunteers - although the present government are quite as robust in that area, and a few other odds and sods. However you're quite right to day it does fall well short of financial support and that's an issue for some areas that might benefit from better protection.

The donations have increased 2000 fold since all this kicked off, just over a few days. That's amazing but it's going to piss of UKGov big time and it's not like they can threaten the funding either :gigglesnshit:

Why would it piss off the Government? They can save money by letting the RNLI escort migrants instead of having to pay someone to do it.

The donations pay for all of that, i'm not sure how it all works when they land, do they get medical treatment or checks or do they just run off as soon as they can ? :dunno:

I mean that the Government can just let the public pay for it via donations instead of using taxes.

I don't know what happened to the migrants/refugees - I haven't read anything about what happened after they reached the shore.

It's a great service operated almost exclusively outside the rhelm of government.

That's probably why it's so effective. :leer:

When you say almost you of course mean that it couldn't function anywhere near as effectively without a close working relationship with the Coast Guard, the Military who it can call for support and let's not forget those nice people at the Met Office.

They go to Rags house for a hot meal followed by cheese and biscuits. They return the hospitality by giving her some diversity training.

I doubt these lifeboat folks have any arrest powers. I'm sure they radio the authorities and let them know they are bringing folks ashore.

We have nothing like this in the US that I know of.

Our Coast Guard is now federal law enforcement and must follow federal law. Cubans caught at sea are returned to Cuba (what happens to them there is anyone's guess).

Cubans and Haitians are much better off if they can get picked up by private individuals, or better yet, make it to Florida.
