Unfortunately Europe has a long list of serious floods.

East Europe has been enjoying weeks of 30+c temps though so maybe they might get hit next.

Yeah some pretty horrendous figures - though it seems by the late 50's technology had finally advanced. I remember the Boscastle flood in 2004 from the dramatic news reports showing vehicles floating off down to the harbour and out to sea like they were just plastic toys! A miracle no lives lost in that flood.

The hottest years recorded were in the 1930s and those records stand to this day.
Trouble with modern floods is the way river courses have been changed in many places for agriculture roads buildings etc.
Major floods in the UK especially Yorkshire always have the blaring headline of climate change which is usually total bollox.
Because of constant flooding when the moorlands had taken in as much water as possible it would be released onto the towns below so in Georgian times massive drainage works were undertaken.
The Victorians updated and maintained them and flooding became far less common.
Toward the latter half of the 20th century it was an expense that could be avoided and the drainage systems fell into total derelict disrepair and we now see massive flooding.
On top of that there are airports motorways thousands of drainage areas called gardens that would soak up heavy rain all gone under concrete or tarmac with very few drains updated to cope with that changed situation.
On top of that is the modern paractice of building on flood plains and wondering why the fuck everyone is flooded.
On top of that a lot of housing and industrial areas roads factories etc moved out of town out of the valleys the original towns were built in and they covered the land higher up.
Water will always head for the lowest point... the old areas of town and we get massive flooding.
Same right across Europe.
As can be seen from the list I provided there have always been flooding problems but it seems modern man has learnt nothing beyond sod that it costs money.

Flood destroys bridges and homes of Lynmouth (1952)

This and always has been the planet we have lived on.
Next an ice age then baking hot then a calmish period then pretty wild and uncertain and on it will always be.

Technology is battling development.

Everytime you cover a piece of dirt with a road, sidewalk or a building, you decrease the amount of rain absorbed into the ground and increase the amount sent downhill. Eventually all that water going downhill collects in creeks, rivers and lakes. All of those bodies of water are trying to handle increasing amounts of water.

It's kind of a big problem here, as we have basically paved N Texas. I guess the only advantage is the lakes have more water for our new Yankee neighbors to drink.

That BBC rolling 'live' news link I posted yesterday isn't keeping up, it's stuck on 15th July.

Current BBC news is reporting "at least" 120 dead in Germany with hundreds more unaccounted for. It's looking pretty bad.

Must admit the weather in Europe is quite different to that in UK. In summer it can be baking hot but if rain comes it's often torrential for about half an hour and then it's over. One year in Poland a rain storm was so bad even my wipers at full speed couldn't clear the screen so I just parked up. Besides, the road had almost become a river and it was far too dangerous to continue driving. Half an hour later it had completely stopped and steam was rising off the road!

All those mountains hold a lot of water ice snow whatever so they get a shit load of flash floods.
Wales on a much smaller scale suffers in the same way.
Nothing so disastrous of course as to what's unfolding on the continent right now.
