A shortage of skilled trade workers has developed as European Union migrants leave the UK and demand for home improvements rises, the founder of Homeserve has said.

Chief executive Richard Harpin said the shortages were "pretty bad" across the country, not just in construction but in other trades too.

He wants the government to put more trades on its jobs shortage list.

The Home Office said employers should invest in UK workers.

Mr Harpin, whose company also operates Checkatrade, told BBC Radio Four's Today programme he believed shortages were being caused by "mainly EU migrant workers going home".

He said it was "really important that we find a way to get them back" in order to cope with the "massive demand" for work.

"Our research in Checkatrade says 80% of homeowners are going to improve their home this year but they can only do that if we have sufficient trades to do those home improvements," he said.

Let's be fair Covid has definitely played a role. Not just because of restriction on movement and the deaths of older skilled British trades workers - who haven't been replaced at anywhere near the rate required due to the Conservative's record of failure in FE and skills training - but also because there are people whose work habits will have changed permanently and they will be working more from home. There's an extraordinarly demand for trades workers to convert spare rooms and loft spaces into home offices.

But again any problems that exist are made worse by the incompetence of this government. That's why the UK now has more new covid deaths than the rest of the EU put together. https://www.euronews.com/2020/06/04/uk- ... 7-combined

Some Boris neglects to add when he mentions the vaccine in every single answer he gives in Parliament.

Again - as Maddog will point out - the answer is simple. Do away with the regulations preventing skilled EU trades people coming to the UK. But that won't sit well with the xenophones who voted for Brexit.

(If you haven't seen Maximillien Robespiere's vids yet, he's worth checking out, Cactus. I've learnt a lot stumbling randomly on these gems on YT).

Went to get some fish and chips at the award winning Hanburys in Babbacombe, there was a sign up that said the restaurent was closed until September because of lack of staff, the Buccaneer around the corner that is right on Babbacombe downs and is usually heaving was closed until further notice for the same reason :shake head:

The staff are probably all self isolating.

Are the employees that would normally be there, getting paid by the government still?

No, the take away was working as usual. The pub has a big open area and the Downs in front of it.

What I mean is, are there workers that could be filling these jobs, not working because they are still getting some sort of Covid related relief?

We has some pretty significant labor shortages in the service industry because folks can make 600-700 per week staying home vs whatever it is they make cooking fish and chips.

Social Security (welfare) payments aren't that generous.

So bad employers can't get employees.

Sucks to be a bad employer.

Yeah but no. Minor celeb at work is driving a truck instead of doing software dev stuff. I've worked many bars and I like weekends and Christmas now.
