Brexit chaos could bring down Theresa May -- and her government

(CNN)Suddenly, things are about to get very serious for British Prime Minister Theresa May.
Lawmakers will this week hold a nonbinding vote on the future of Britain's trade after Brexit. It is a vote that could set in motion a series of events that could lead to the fall of the Prime Minister and her Conservative government.
The House of Commons will vote on whether the UK should stay in the customs union with the European Union -- allowing tariff-free trade to continue with the bloc after Brexit.

While the vote won't be legally binding, it carries huge symbolic weight, because it will show the strength of opposition among members of Parliament to May's plan for a hard Brexit -- which would see the UK leave both the customs union and the EU's single market.

Leaving the customs union is one of the Prime Minister's red lines in negotiations with Brussels. If the vote goes in favor of staying in, it is a serious test for May's premiership.
Last week, the House of Lords voted against May's government and in favor of Britain staying in the customs union -- showing that there is no majority for a hard Brexit in that upper chamber.
Potentially, there is also no majority for a hard Brexit in the House of Commons. What's more, the Prime Minister has no overall parliamentary majority for her ruling Conservative Party, which is only in power because of the support from the smaller Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party.
So May would have a dilemma: does she continue to maintain her red lines on Brexit, or does she start to recognize her political weakness and make concessions?

Some British media has suggested that this vote may become a confidence vote: meaning that if the government loses the vote, it has 14 days to win a confidence vote. If it fails to do so, Britain will hold its third general election in four years.

The Tories have been very careful to rule out a confidence vote.

May's real problem is the bunch of Brexit-mad people in her cabinet. Every concession to the reality of Brexishambles gets her nearer the inevitable coup.

She has already had to slap down Boris twice in the last few days.

His shadow hangs over her like a black cloud, with Greasy Mugg in the background. You can bet that secret talks have already taken place about who will back who in a 'night of the long knives', and an election is sure to follow.

The Government won't fall but there will have to be some concessions on a new style Customs Union.

Hardcore Brexiteers are likely to be disappointed.

Disappointed is one word for it.

Greaseball-Mugg has said he will emigrate.

Others have threatened outright mutiny. I can't wait. Then there are the Bow group demands, the Tory 'red lines'....

A good time to check out the latest London polling for the May 5th elections.

London council elections in May, local government voting intentions are CON 28%(+2), LAB 54%(+17), LDEM 11%(+1), GRN 4%(-6) UKIP 2%(-10). Changes are since the last London local elections which were back in 2014, on the same day as the European Parliament elections.

If these figures were to be reflected in May’s elections it would be an extremely strong performance for Labour, building upon 2014 results which were already pretty strong.

In inner London the poll suggests a swing of 13 points from Conservative to Labour – that would be enough for Labour to win the “flagship” Tory borough of Wandsworth (controlled by the Conservatives since 1978) and Westminster (controlled by the Conservatives since it was created in 1964).

However, it wouldn’t necessarily net Labour a huge number of extra councillors since in many inner London boroughs like Islington, Lambeth and Lewisham Labour already hold the overwhelming majority of the councillors anyway.

In outer London, where the Conservatives are likely to be picking up votes that went to UKIP last time, the poll suggests a much smaller swing to Labour – something around four points. That would be enough for Labour to take Barnet.

Seems like an excellent night ahead for one party in London. And you'd have to have a very skewed view to think it would be anyone but Labour.....

Nationwide there was also a new GB poll out today from ICM for the Guardian. Topline figures there are CON 42%(+1), LAB 43%(+3), LDEM 7%(-1).

Gosh, it went quiet all of a sudden.

And there was me, patiently waiting to hear why the latest poll released this morning is bad news for Labour in London.

Oh well.
