Do I need to add the jam on the marzipan before icing? If my memory serves me right I don't.
We all hate marzipan, not sure why I bother really.
No, you spread the jam over the cake and then lay the marzipan over that and trim it to size. I'm not sure if you can put royal icing straight onto a cake. There might be staining if you did. However.... if you use fondant icing, I think it can be done without marzipan.
If you like the look of royal icing though, you can do a layer of fondant icing with royal icing on top. I think you still need the jam to keep it nicely in place though.
