Sadly all countries will have destroyed some vaccine doses, the Astra Zenica vaccine is the most resilient able to remain viable stored at normal fridge temperatures they don't even have to be frozen. Other vaccines have to be kept below -15C, that's colder than most domestic freezers can acheive.

That's why mandates and vaccination programs are the best and most efficient way to get the vaccine out there and why you should make sure you turn up for your booster shot. Boosters are most likely to be the Moderna or Pfizer jabs and any not used at the end of the day will have to be thrown away.

I went to a prize giving (just to clap, I have to admit) and one of the recipients happened to be a local GP. He’d brought 8 pfizer doses with him, left over from the days endeavours. In his moment of fame, he asked if anyone wanted a shot. All were gone in 15 mins. Waste not want not.

We had plenty of folks vaccinated like that in the early days. If you knew the right folks, you would get a call about 4pm letting you know some clinic or doctor had some doses that needed to be used that day. If you could get there in an hour or so, they would stick it in your arm.

I read that an African country destroyed vaccines for the same reason - can't remember which one.

I can't believe that vaccines are going out of date already, but then if they don't work because they're out of date there's no point having them.

SA is world class in disease control which has everything to do with it, they notified the world about the new variant. It didn't start there.

Prove that it didn't start there. You think that African countries are immune to Covid variants?.

No, I'm not a pathologist.

Vaccines have been hoarded by the 1st and 2nd worlds leaving the virus to do WTF it wants in Africa. African scientists were key in containing Ebola and know the threat of viruses and identified this variant, there has been no proof that this started in SA.

The leaders in the West are going through the motions of protecting their citizens, even though it won't work.

Government doesn't have to accomplish things. It has to act like it's doing something that will help.

So much of it's kabuki theater.

You summed that up very well.

I think many posters/people try to align themselves with one group or another any time there is a conflict.

The reality is both sides can be trying to pander to their supporters to stay in power.

So many people have been conditioned to see how government reacts to everything. They demand a reaction. They don't demand a reaction that works, and won't accept doing nothing about something as a legitimate response.

I guess we pay so much in taxes now, and hear so many promises, that we just expect to have solutions from government..

Good grief are you ever done bitching about stuff you don't have a fucking clue about?

It's not about stopping the variant it's about slowing it down for long enough to see out the winter months, which are a time when healthcare capacity is usually stretched. As a bonus you also buy time for the scientists to tweak the vaccines and make them even better.

A sensible person would be preaching the need to reinforce the message to get vaccinated and do as Germany and Australia are doing, putting more pressure on citizens to get vaccinated. And NO putting pressure on citizens to get vaccinated is not taking away their freedom it's making them face the consequences of their actions and not pass them on to someone else. A vaccinated person wearing a face mask is protecting you in the diner, bar or restaurant and if you can't return the favour that should be your problem not theirs.

It's the same with all the variants - spread patterns change and disease control know what they're looking for long before they find it, it's all in the numbers.

SA disease control are world class but just as our politicians ignore SAGE advice whilst assuring us they're 'following the science' SA politicians do the same.

All have a responsibility to share all information about this pandemic, especially new variants, and quite rightly too.

If Britain discovers a new variant, announces it, and gets travelled banned by the rest of the world, then that is fine by me.

And if Ireland discovers one and announces it the same applies.

Nice to see someone talking sense Raven

How can anyone take offence at common sense policies in the height of a worldwide pandemic?
Mind you, Cyril is as thick as pigshit, and all SA Presidents since Nelson have failed miserably to match his ability to unify the nation and rule with honesty and good intentions for all peoples in SA.

I can't help but agree.

When one party is in power too long it all goes to pot; was it you offered the quote government need to changed like nappies - and for the same reason?
