US researchers found that the practice makes youngsters "more aggressive".

The study, which follows less than a month after Scotland joined the list of countries to ban smacking children altogether, adds to a growing case against the use of corporal punishment.

Dr Elizabeth Gershoff of the University of Texas at Austin, who led the study, has conducted extensive research into the use of smacking on children and has concluded that it is “making them more aggressive and more antisocial”.

Past studies have also linked corporal punishment in children to the onset of depression, anxiety and drugs and alcohol abuse.

In the latest study, published in Psychological Science, Dr Gershoff and her collaborators recorded the behaviour of children whose parents did not smack them and those that did, as reported by their teachers.

Their findings showed a clear distinction between the groups, with an increase in behavioural problems from the age of five to eight.

It affected how often they argue with other children, fight, act impulsively and disturb activities in the classroom,” said Dr Gershoff.

Conducting a controlled experiment to find the effects of smacking on children is unethical, as it would involve telling parents to smack their children.

However, by dividing the 12,112 participating children into smacked and non-smacked groups, and then pairing them according to various characteristics, the researchers were able to approximate an experimental setup.

Dr Gershoff says one of the main links between smacking and bad behaviour is that children don’t have to learn self-control.

“What smacking teaches them is that when the parent is around, they should behave, otherwise they will be hit,” she said. “The child does not learn how to manage themselves when the parent is not around.”

Hitting people is an acceptable outlet for your own frustration.

Learnt behaviour.

I chose to break the chain with my kids. Beating the shit out of each other when play fighting is one thing, using physical violence as a punishment is a whole different world.

Denial is refusing to admit something - I have nothing to deny or admit.

I should have added OUR SOCIETY so now there should be nothing to 'work on'

Depends, does 'our society' involve goose stepping?

No idea, as I don't HATE gays, women or foreigners. :dunno:

Women? I love for the most part, have as much respect for them as I do members of my own sex, though I dislike some of both.

Gays? I don't have any problem with as long as they are not trying to force their abberation on me or others.

Foreigners? Again no problem with foreigners in their own countries as long as they don't try to influence my country and ultimately me.

Foreigners living here? No problem if they have or are trying to build a life here, integrate into our society and work toward the greater good of not just themselves but our society.

Foreigners I dislike are ones that come here purely for their own good, take what they can and do nothing for the greater good of our society or actively work against it.

As is often the case, it isn't always the members of a race, sexual persuasion or gender who cause discontent, it's those who are not of a particular persuasion trying to tell me or force me into treating those who are, as special cases.

All seem quite logical views to hold. :dunno:

I can understand a parent who does it on the spur of the moment, a wallop for something very naughty or prolonged where they've reached the end of their tether, I can't where a smacking or wallop comes after time passes to consider your reaction, like a sort of ritualised punishment.

I got my fair share of clumps and smacks from my Mum, rarely from my Dad, but it isn't surprising as she had to bring up four boys with two years separating each whilst my Dad spent much of our early years as a night duty copper.

I can honestly say I probably deserved every one of them as did my brothers, but just as honestly can say they were all spur of the moment. Sometimes my Mum would say wait until your father gets home, which did fill us with dread, even though he never once hit us after the fact.

In fact I can only remember him hitting me once, but I was 15 then and fighting with my younger brother, he hit is both once, needless to say we stopped fighting immediately and didn't fight again when he was about.

On reflection we were probably quite old when Mum hit us, around 10 ish, by then we would pretend it hurt, then go to another room or out of sight and giggle and snort to each other. We all love/ loved our Mum and Dad and none of us needed counselling because of being smacked.

I also like haggis.... had it sliced with a breakfast in Edinburgh, was lovely

I liked haggis the one time that I was served it, I wouldn't pick it as a preference though.

It was normal when I was a kid.

If you were well out of order you got a smacked arse.

Never did me any harm or anyones else I knew for that matter.

There is a massive difference between that and genuine abuse but the distinction seems lost on many people.

Anyway how can you possibly enforce a law like this?

Also if you got into trouble at school you got into bother at home as well - now it's often the teachers who get in difficulty from the parents coming round to have a go for daring to question their entitled little darlings if they act like scumbags.
